Where did my pixellation go?

Hi there. First of all, I did try several searches but none of them found such a topic so I started a new one. I'm sorry if another one exists.

There's the issue itself. No matter how I try to configure ZSNES and what video modes I select, I can never, never, never get the original pixellated quality of the picture in windowed mode. The picture is always filtered and... you know, slightly blurry from the smoothing.

I've been a SNES9x user for some time but its speed issues are starting to get on my tits and I decided to join the many

The only thing which has prevented me from using ZSNES before is that same deal - not being able to get the unfiltered, pixellated picture in windowed mode.

I'd be really glad if someone has a solution to this.

Try change the resolution to a DR Win mode. This works for me.

Yes, it does work.
But that windowsize is... tiny!

I can't understand why any other DR mode won't stay pixellated

That just doesn't make sense. Show me a screenshot with a pixellated windowed video mode other than 512x448 and I'll consider the probability of video drivers causing it.

Here're the modes on a Radeon 9200 (desktop was 32 bpp):

0512x448 DR W
0512x448 DR W interpolation.png
0512x448 R W
0640x480 DS W
0640x480 DS W interpolation
0640x480 S W
0768x672 DR W
0768x672 DR W interpolation
0768x672 R W
1024x768 DS W
1024x768 DS W interpolation
1024x768 S W

You see that "D" and "S" modes are blurred by the card, and in "DR" and "DS" modes they're not - unless you tell ZSNES to do so in software.

On my older ATI Rage Pro, the "D" and "S" modes are not blurred because the card doesn't have that feature.
ZSNES can't change that behaviour; it's a driver/hardware problem.

the DS/DR modes are fully pixilated when unfiltered, just use them at a higher res or full screen if it's too small. The other modes aren't any bigger, so I fail to see why you would use the D or S modes at all.

I am having the exact same problem as the original poster.

ONLY 512x448 DR shows the proper, pixellated picture.

If this is truly related to video hardware, what is the setting that needs to be changed? Does zsnes use directX to draw the screen, and maybe that's why it's smoothing everything?

Really hoping for a fix to this, as I can't stannnd snes9x

that would depend on your video card, now wouldn't it? not necessarily a universal fix, here.

and, it works fine for me. 640x480 dr full screen. pixellation in all its glory. i personally prefer hq2x.

I think I also have a pixelation fetish... which is why I sometimes enjoy Quake 1/2 in software, hehe. I do prefer Super 2xSai, though. I like the hqxx filters, but they occasionally make my framerate drop to like 58, which creates an ever-so-barely-noticable-but-yet-still-maddening stutter.

Yeah, but cards typically use standard libraries to render graphics to the screen. So, if anyone knows what library ZSNES uses (or maybe if it somehow does direct-writing through the asm code?) that would be a big help. That way I could theoretically tell my video card to disable filtering for that library. I'm too lazy to go on a massive trial-and-error hunt for the correct option.

If they implement software stretching for unfiltered modes, or maybe use a different blitting method, that would fix the problem.

I just want to say that I verified that the blurriness is caused by DirectDraw acceleration that is on by default in the DirectX settings for my card.

By using the DirectX Control Panel (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4017.html) you can disable DD acceleration and have wondrous pixellation.

Hopefully that'll solve it for you guys!

Voodoo cards are great for not blurring anything. I have a Voodoo 3 and a Voodoo 5 and neither blur anything at any resolution.

I remember that one was a touch faster than my Diamond TNT2 ultra, but with poorer image quality.

What ever happend to 3dfx and the Voodoo line?

nVidia bought out 3dfx, did they not? I can't even run my Voodoo 5 in my computer because it is not compatible with my AGP Pro slot.
