how important are rom checksums in playing the game? should roms with failed checksums be trashed? thanks in advance.

Good ROMs should have good checksums, unless you're applying a patch.

The checksum is only important as a first indicator for ROM tampering. The CRC32 values are more precise; check them with NSRT.
