Thats the same with firefox 3 and 2.
I was just pre-emptively pointing out that you don't lose quick-search capacity by using a browser with no search box. I figured Firefox probably didn't disable the URL bar search.

So... can you disable the totally superfluous search box and recover your URL bar space? Not last time I checked.

That new for 3?
Because I looked and couldn't find the option in 2. Where is it?

Right click it -> customize -> drag it onto the customize box.

I, for one, use multiple search engines on a daily basis. Not quite superfluous.

Seconded, I use that thing all the time. Honestly, between that and having extensive bookmarks, I haven't typed anything in my url bar in probably over a year.

View->Toolbars->Customize

Then drag and drop stuff to add or remove stuff that you see, including the Search Bar.

See: sidebar.
And you were complaining about the reduction of screen real estate?, I honestly find CTRL+K and then CTRL+UP/DOWN MUCH more convenient.

I agree with that. Thanks for those keyboard combinations, too. That's quite useful.

I don't use the sidebar either.
But it's easy to toggle on and off(just tap F9), so it only uses space when it's actually in use. The search bar isn't.

It also provides a good bit of extra functionality beyond what the search bar provides(just within the search tab, even).
The search bar's entire functionality is a single drop-down menu. The text box is just a crippled URL bar.

Which really gets to the heart of the matter. If it was JUST the menu button, or if it brought anything new to the table, I'd find it a lot less offensive. As-is, it takes space from the URL bar to duplicate the URL bar's built-in functionality.

So Firefox 3 is most definitely faster, but it's also taking up more memory than 2.0.x.x. Kind of a mixed bag here.

I'd rather have it not crash excessively first... what kind of crappy app that crashes early and often? :P

You're talking to the person that disables the "go" button on the end of the URL bar.

I very rarely need the space(it's ahppened a few times, amazingly enough), but I dislike having un-necessary controls front and center, and I HATE having duplicate controls right next to each other.

You don't really need to go button anyway, or the back/forward button, or the refresh button:

refresh: ctrl+r
go: enter (duh)
back: alt+left
forward: alt+right

And the address bar? Fuck that, you don't need an address bar either:
ctrl+l

Mwhaha, here's what my firefox looks like: (well, it's minefield, an experimental build of firefox)

Back and forward carry extra functionality. The drop arrows next to them bring up a mini-history. Very useful in some situations.

Refresh can also be activated by pressing F5.

Actually, ctrl-shift-L brings up the "open web location" window in Seamonkey. I suppose it's one of the many keyboard shortcuts changed for Firefox.

Either way... I find F6 an easier shortcut most of the time, and it only works if the URL bar is visible.
The URL bar is also a useful information display device, as well as providing a convenient way to edit or copy URLs you didn't type in manually.

And that's why I don't surf with no toolbars.

So, are you guys all complaining about the Google Search bar in the top right, next to the address bar (default theme)? I find it useful, sometimes I don't want to go to the first result so i type what im after in there instead.

Maybe it's just me, but something about 3.0 just feels...shoddy. I can't place why, but it's just bothering me.

What about when you hit one of those pages with an instant redirect, and pressing back triggers the instant redirect?

Yes, the search bar. It's not the Google Search bar, as it supports many search engines.

And what do you mean go to the first result?
A URL bar search brings up a search engine page. Unless Firefox is gay... wait... never mind.

If you type something in the address bar it takes you to the first result normally. If you type it in the search bar, it will instead list a bunch of results.
