The Google homepage purposely doesn't validate.
One of their goals was to sacrifice every standard, as long as it can run and show properly on every used browser. They did this, because they want as little markup as possible so it loads instantly.

I'm sorry, but who gives a fuck about valid code. as long as it works in ie then you're all good. who needs doctype anyways, I've never used it. waste of bandwidth, I bet not putting that bullshit there saves them millions of dollars a year. I think it's worth saving that money and having 1 nerd on the planet point it out.

maybe for google... but there are sites that would benefit from markup, like documentation sites etc.phOnYmIkE wrote:I'm sorry, but who gives a fuck about valid code. as long as it works in ie then you're all good. who needs doctype anyways, I've never used it. waste of bandwidth, I bet not putting that bullshit there saves them millions of dollars a year. So if the software your bank uses to manage your savings account compiles with error checking levels set to minimum, and passes most of its test cases, that's good enough for you?phOnYmIkE wrote:I'm sorry, but who gives a fuck about valid code. as long as it works in ie then you're all good. who needs doctype anyways, I've never used it. waste of bandwidth, I bet not putting that bullshit there saves them millions of dollars a year. these websites (google, my bank's) are made for one person: me. if the user isn't gonna notice any difference, then why invest money in fixing it? that's like saying "I'd rather spend $30 more on this samsung monitor, because it runs 1 degree cooler, rather than this identical samsung monitor, which runs at standard temperature."
you're not even comparing apples to oranges. you're comparing apples to apples that have a stem that is 0.01mm longer.
besides, who the hell is w3c anyways. they aren't cool, nobody's ever even heard of them before (go ask a random person on the street what w3c is, not those nerdy virgin fags in your html class.) I'll take google over w3c any day. who made w3c king and let them judge other websites by their shit. fuck w3c, google is right, google is always right.
p.s. my bank website comes up with 195 errors. and guess what. I don't give a fuck. because it works. just because some lame website is trying to get attention to itself means I should lose sleep at night about my online banking. fuck w3c, nobody cares.

Seeing as how I'm currently in comp science, I pride myself on writing proper code. I would have thought big companies would write thier pages properly. But whatever.

Let's be honest.. the people hired to do this kind of software generally don't give a crap about correct HTML, rather, just getting the site working and sometimes developed with IE in mind only.
Besides, those sites depend so damn much on cookies that attempts to validate what you see is near impossible.

phonyDike makes me want to stab myself. Who gives a fuck about standards... yeah.
I'm not even going to begin listing all the good things that come from standardization and following standards, especially when it comes to coding and the web.

it's called "getting shit done by the deadline." my bank's website has 195 errors according to that website. big deal, it works, and there aren't any problems with it. you'll never make anything perfect. when coding something, you could sit there for days perfecting it and putting the correct spaces in it and making it look pretty and other bullshit. but it's a waste of time.
it's like going to the car wash, paying five bucks, and afterwards the kid comes up and says "hey, I took the tires off the rims and cleaned inside there, removed the seats and carpets and cleaned the metal floor, and even cleaned up under the dashboard, all at no extra cost." something nobody would ever know about, you'd waste time doing and not get any profit from. waste of time.

Really? I wish every website loaded instantly like that.

I can sure as hell make sure I don't get any compiler warnings, which in turn means my code has a higher chance of working correctly.phOnYmIkE wrote:when coding something, you could sit there for days perfecting it and putting the correct spaces in it and making it look pretty and other bullshit. but it's a waste of time.

Website development doesn't have the strictness a compiler has.. so one is not as compelled to fix said problems.Noxious Ninja wrote:I can sure as hell make sure I don't get any compiler warnings, which in turn means my code has a higher chance of working correctly.phOnYmIkE wrote:when coding something, you could sit there for days perfecting it and putting the correct spaces in it and making it look pretty and other bullshit. but it's a waste of time.
On the other hand, writing bad code is like doing a half assed job. Sure you fixed the problem, but the chance of something breaking is greater when you revisit said code. Using the car wash analogy, if someone used crappy soaps, don't be surprised there will be nasty shit appearing on that car very soon.

Of course, web development is one of those places where sometimes bad code works and good code doesn't.Deathlike2 wrote:Website development doesn't have the strictness a compiler has.. so one is not as compelled to fix said problems.Noxious Ninja wrote:I can sure as hell make sure I don't get any compiler warnings, which in turn means my code has a higher chance of working correctly.phOnYmIkE wrote:when coding something, you could sit there for days perfecting it and putting the correct spaces in it and making it look pretty and other bullshit. but it's a waste of time.

This is quite a sad truth. In an ideal world, all rpojects would be carefully planned and designed, so your software/webpage will be long term maintainable, clean and valid. In most real world cases, deadlines kill every single chance of the aforementioned happen.phOnYmIkE wrote:it's called "getting shit done by the deadline."

wasting time perfecting code isn't neccessary. no code is perfect, it doesn't have to be, and yours never will be either you ocd bastard.
