weird firefox linux issue...

Post by jdratlif »

Has anyone ever had slow browser issues on a specific site using Firefox in Linux?

I was trying to make some requests for stuff at my library on their website and it was very slow last night. I also got several errors when trying to do it (i.e. the page said error), so I assumed it was either a problem on their end, or maybe since I was updating Windows XP in vmware at the time, I was exceeding my bandwidth or using too much memory.

This morning, I tried again. Same problems. So I wondered if maybe it was a Firefox issue. I've tried IE7 in Windows XP (vmware under the same linux box), Firefox (2.0.0.4) on Vista on my laptop, and Opera (9.20) on the same linux box. They all work just fine.

Anyone ever seen anything like this, or know anything I might look at to solve the problem?

It seems like it can't be my router, OS, or NIC. It's very specific to Firefox Linux. I've tried it built from source and I've tried it with the linux binary.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on gentoo with a 2.6.20 kernel running Gnome 2.16 (gtk+ 2.10.11). I have cable broadband (10 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up).

The only issue I've come across with Firefox under linux is the obvious lack of transparancy in flash... fucking Mozilla...
Visit www.voxel.net if you haven't seen the issue yet. See the big white box where there's supposed to be content?

is firefox trying repeatedly to do something stupid like download a huge search suggestion file while simultaneously updating all rss feeds?

Well, he said Firefox under Linux. This might not be an issue with Firefox under Windows.
Try out CCleaner and other free software at Piriform

I don't think so. I don't have any extra rss feeds installed other than the default latest headlines.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by huge search suggestion file. But my library searches are pretty small. Just a single title search for some DVD I want.

I've usually had firefox in Linux go slow like loading a myspace every time someone posts a billion and one emoticons on forums, or when I look at a bunch of inlined images
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?
NSRT here.

I've noticed this on a few forum sites, but there are very few images on the site I'm having trouble with.
