Latest SVN gives no audio in Linux even without libao

It's entirely possible that this is the problem described on the news page, whose solution is to upgrade to a newer kernel. However, I also have some reason to suspect that it is not the same problem, and since on my present system such an upgrade is a decidedly nontrivial operation, I want to do what I can to rule out other possibilities before taking the step of upgrading. (If it matters: I'm running kernel 2.6.11.2.)

First: I have an installed copy of ZSNES, built from SVN on April 21st with './configure --enable-release', which produces sound just fine. It appears to be using SDL for audio output.

If I build from as-of-yesterday SVN with simply './configure --enable-release', it produces no unusual error messages and no sound, and tells me that it was not configured with --enable-libao. It likewise appears to be using SDL for audio output.

If I instead build with './configure --enable-release --enable-libao', the result produces no sound. It appears to be using ALSA for audio output by default; it prints 'ALSA: underrun, at least 0ms' to the console multiple times a second. (THis may have something to do with the fact that the associated -ad option name is 'alsa09', but I have ALSA 1.0.13 installed.) I have tried with '-ad sdl' and gotten the same result as when compiling without '--enable-libao'. I have tried with '-ad oss' and gotten sound, but it sounds very scratchy and perhaps somewhat fast, almost nothing like what I get on the real console - or, for that matter, what I get with the version from April.

From the description of the kernel-bug problem, it sounds as if it should affect only builds which use libao. Since I get no sound with SDL even without libao, but do get sound with SDL with the older version, I suspect that this may not be the same problem.

Any ideas of what might be going on, or what I could do to track this down further?
