Problems with sound in linux

I recently installed Slackware 10 on an old laptop i have at home and then when i found out that there was a linux zsnes port i promptly installed that. Everything works fine except for the sound, which is is just plain wrong (misses notes, wrong tone ect.) it is also 'laggy'. If i press <esc> to stop the sound keeps on going for about a second and if i speed it up the sound continues sped up for a while after i've stopped too. Here are my specs:

Gateway solo 2500 (http://tinyurl.com/3vjsy)
celeron 400mhz
96 megabytes of ram
NeoMagic NM2160 4mb video card
NeoMagic NMA 2 sound card

i'm using the alsa Yamaha OPL3SA2+ drivers for the sound card, and the sound works almost perfectly for everything else. Anyone know how to fix the problem or know what it is?

Edit 1: okkkkkk...
for some reason i'm using the september 7 WIP even though i though i downloaded the newest one a couple of days ago. I'll try the newest one.

Edit 2: no luck. Same problem, although i think the the sound is a little better, although it may be my imagination.

That didn't help. The exact same thing happens in 1.36...
