List some decent/good RPGs with *no* random battles
I'm looking to put together a list of RPGs worth playing (with the intent of finding a few gems that I may have missed) that don't have random battles. I just don't have the patience for. Where to start? This can include adventure type games like Ys Ark of Napishtm and Zelda, along with games like Chrono Cross and Xenosaga. Suggestions?

exactly, the demo turned me off to it, and the lukewarm reviews cemented my position. i'm still holding out hope, though.Panzer88 wrote:that was a surprisingly bland demo. I was thoroughly disappointed, I really wanted that game to be hot.
and back on topic, i'm also going to mention marvel ultimate alliance. while not exactly deep or epic on the story, it's just way fun to play.

Chrono Trigger may not have random battles, but I still find it´s unavoidable battles quite annoying.
For GBA there´s Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, which is not REALLY an RPG, but it´s still interesting, has no random battles but LOTS of unavoidables. Shining Soul?
Maybe it´s dumb, but have you played the Soulblazer saga for the SNES?

The jury's out on The Silver Star.odditude wrote:Never played them. I definitely enjoyed the remakes, though.Que wrote:The sega CD originals are better.odditude wrote:Lunar: Silver Star Story
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue
(the PSX remakes)
The game had a MASSIVE rewrite for Silver Star Story that completely changes the entire point of the game and makes Lunar 2 fundamentally broken, continuity-wise(parts of EB, even in the remake, assume things happened as illustrated in The Silver Star).
But the original Silver Star has rather crude gameplay, most notably in that your spell list "auto-sorts" by putting them in order of last usage. Which would be NICE if it weren't for the fact that there are NO spell descriptions OR MP costs attached to the names, and the names aren't always descriptive enough.
The fact that it's one of the last great silent protagonist games also throws some people.
Eternal Blue, however, is INFINITELY superior to the remake in almost every way. Including FMVs, as the SCD version has more of them in genrally higher quality due to lack of artifacting(though backgrounds are simple gradients in many of them instead of artifacted-beyond-recognition background images). How a single-disk SegaCD game can beat a 3-disk PlayStation/Saturn game in that regard is anyone's guess, but it's embarassing.
Also: You can rob Mystere of his equipment, party mask excepted.
Which, while causing slight continuity problems, is utterly hilarious.
You can steal Leo's gear right before you get split up, steal Mystere's gear right before he leaves you, then steal Leo's gear AGAIN when he rejoins you. You've just robbed the poor fool 3 times in the space of a half-hour.

About the only downside is that Mystere's role was marginally expanded in the SS/PS EB. And more Mystere is ALWAYS a good thing.

Good call! I bought the FMV's on eBay for Xenosaga II, I loved III however, and was glad to see them end the series on such a high note, albeit abruptly.Vault Dweller wrote:The Xenosaga games. Though you may want to skip the second one, since the game isn't as good as the others. Though, should you want the full effect of the story you'll NEED to play it.
