Snes9x 1.51 SPU issues

Post by neo_bahamut1985 »

Okay, whenever I use SNES9x v1.51 Win32 build, I'm getting constant crackling and popping in my sound; I tried to set different buffer lengths (all of them), I've tried changing the different sound frequencies; all-in-all, I've tried all possible sound combos. My sound card is a Realtek HD 5.1 sound card. What the crap's going on!?

Edit 2:39PM - P.S. seems that it happens only when I turn on SPU Async, but even then, it shouldn't create the issue; this never happened before.

Your sound card drivers suck? Try the FMOD audio driver options.

That does fix the popping, etc. but I prefer to have SPU Async; it just sounds better.

edit 3:14PM - I checked to see what kind of sound card I have and all it says (in dxdiag) is "Realtek HD Audio". Is there a way to find out the model/type so I can upgrade the drivers?

Your mobo manufacturer usually has updates on their website, assuming you didn't buy a premade system. If you bought a premade system, go to that manufacturer's website and search.

or get the latest drivers from realtek o_O after looking in your motherboard manual for the model of the sound chip.

ah, see, my brother gave this to PC to us (since he wasn't using it) and I don't have access to the manual. I do know it's Asus.

Use CPU-Z or WhatCPU to determine what exact mobo model you have.

Ah! It's an Asus P5WD2-Premium. Cool software! Seems I also have a P4 Prescott 3.2GHz CPU. Cool

Talk about fast response. Thanks. BTW, where can I find that out in XP?

You would probably need software like Everest or Aida32 for details such as the specific version of the codec. Alternatively, you can simply download the Manual from the ASUS support page I linked, which has every detail about your motherboard and its features.

for me the realtek sound adjustment panel has a info option which also lists the exact codec that is used.

I have driver ver. 5.10.00.5345, what's the latest one? I just tried downloading the one for XP but wouldn't let me install it....? Lemme try it once more..

edit 9:35PM : hmm...perhaps it'd be best to wait for the next release, huh?

Those "sound issues" you are having will not magically go away on a new release.

I guess you're right. After all I do have Zsnes/SnesGT/SNEeeSe/etc. I just wanted to use it for old times sake.

Edit 11/3/07 7:47AM - just a quick observation; SNES9xw is the only emulator with this problem. All other SNES emus don't have it.

The latest driver for your card is 1.80 (5.10.0.5497). If it won't let you install it check the manual.

Thanks! I wll try it.

Edit 5:16PM - I tried it and the issue still remains. My question is, if it is a driver issue, why would the problem affect one program and nothing else? Zsnes/SnesGT/etc all sound fine.

Because drivers, like all software, are non-linear systems. Slight differences in usage can result in major differences in behavior.

I stand corrected; maybe I'll just wait till the next Zsnes and/or SNES9x comes out....which will most likely be a long wait.

It's really unfortunate -- I also get the crackling pops when I have sound sync enabled. I use an on board sound SoundMax HD Audio and before posting I tried looking for driver updates and other various fixes but to no avail. I figured my sound card was just not compatible with the snes9x emulated sound sync which was a real shame because I looked forward to playing SNES games with the hq3x setting.

I even tried it on all four of my PCs in my house, one of which has two different audio interfaces. That's five unique sound cards, one being a professional grade music mixing audio interface and all of them got the crackle pop... You sure this isn't an emulator fault...?

I probably would have posted this on the snes9x board but from what I read I'd probably just get yelled at for some reason or another.

Yeah, like they'll have SNES9x 1.52 or Zsnes 1.52 anytime soon. So, guess I'll just wait..
