Clock Tower + Tales of Phantasia Graphical Bugs.

Post by non-1337 »

I have problems running these two games, using 10/24/04WIP and on an AthlonXP 1050 Thunderbird, nVidia TNT2 Video card, on Windows XP.

First, on Clock Tower. I had no problems running it (or both of them, for that matter) on previous versions of ZSNES, but on the new build, the background color changes to semen-white. Here's the ROM info...
File: Clock Tower (J).smc Header: Yes
CLOCK TOWER SFX TYPE:NORMAL
INTERLEAVED:No BANK:Hi CHKSUM:FAIL

And here's a screenshot:

And on Tales of Phantasia (patched with deJap's translation) the intro is all messed up. This did not happen with previous versions, too. Here's the ROM info, and a screenshot...
File: top.smc Header: Yes
ToP English (C) DeJa TYPE:NORMAL
INTERLEAVED:Yes BANK:EHi CHKSUM:OK

Thanks.

I can't reproduce either bugs, this is likely a problem with your machine. Try updating your video card drivers and/or changing video resolutions. You may also want to update DirectX.

Heh, testing Clock Tower reminded me just how dumb and annoying that game is. Funny, though.

Seconded. Can't reproduce either of them, with or without their respective patches.

Hey, don't knock clock tower. ;0

Not really. At least you explained your problem well.
Not only that, but this isn't mentioned in the docs (that may have to change).

I'd much rather deal with your problems then "OMFG ITS B0RKED! FIX0RED IT!" Don't worry about it.

Oh, alright. thanks. I think it's a DirectDraw problem. Anyway, there's another problem that I have-- when using "Windows-friendly" (ya know, 640x480,800x600,etc) resolutions, everything isn't as sharp as using other resolutions (512x448, 768x672). Does anyone know why?

Thanks.

The SNES was made for TV output, and those resolutions are closer to TV output than the "windows friendly" ones, thus needing less blur.

At least, that's my best guess on what could be the reason.

640x480 etc. are the fullscreen modes. Either you're using a filter (which isn't available in the "R" modes), or your video card applies some blurring.

I smell nVidia auto-blur.

Is it something like this ?:

Not blurry

It seems to be more like DirectDraw acceleration... I could be wrong though.

..but since he has a TNT2 card, I'm not ruling out that nVidia auto-blur.

@grinvader: Yeah, it was pretty much like the first pic you showed. If I use my friend's Radeon, will the blurring in DirectDraw games (I also get that in Visualboy Advance) be gone? Or is there a driver setting that I need to tweak?

Also, I checked the HQ3X checkbox (what exactly does that do) in video; got a hell lot clearer, although somewhat slower. Thanks again.

I use a Radeon too, and DirectDraw acceleration blurs the image; not that I mind so much.

If you go to the Advanced menu about your video card (accessible from desktop preferences) you should be able to disable blur.

Well, hq3x is a highly CPU-consuming filter that enhances the picture. While in the GUI, if you disabled 'filtered gui', toggling hq3x off shows the nVidia blur, that's what I used to make these comparative pics.

So that's what the nVidia auto-blur looks like. Interesting. :)
