ZSNES Problem

Post by aprince009 »

I am having a problem with the program. I installed the latest version of zsnes (1.51), and when I load the program it gives me a flashing black and blue screen. this is a very old computer (used to run on 98 put on xp) and I'm using it just to do schoolwork and as a secondary computer. here is a comprehensive report of my system info. if you can help that would be much appreciated :)

How is it even possible to run XP without directX 9 at the very least ?

I would blame the integrated video card.

grin, that is DX9 if you look up the version #.

I've always found the way Microsoft uses version numbers in DirectX very counter-intuitive.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

i don't see the benefit of upgrading a 500mhz mendocino celeron with ohmygodineedmoarRAMzbutjesuschristpc100isexpensivenowadays 128MB of RAM to XP.

and i810 integrated graphics suck about as hard as possible.

in general, i'd recommend you do yourself a favor and put 98 back on it.

as for zsnes, put it on your primary computer (which presumably has a bit more oomph).

And firewall/router + virus scanner, or simply no internet at all.

ZSNES should be playable though with that CPU, right?

back in early '01, i ran zsnesw quite beautifully on a mendocino 366 w/ 128MB of RAM and an 8MB riva128zx running win98se - so yeah, the cpu shouldn't be a problem if he avoids special-chip games (and possibly sticks to an older version of zsnes; i don't know how much overhead has been added in the past 8 years).

his biggest issue under 98 is going to be the i810 graphics. dos version would probably run nicely if windows doesn't crash outright; dos version natively might be a nightmare to get audio working.

thanks. well i already do have zsnes on my other computer, but i let my younger brother use this one so he doesnt screw up mine. anyway yea i think my best bet would be to get an older version. or a better graphics card? i think i can install the drivers from my old one onto this computer, i just havent gotten around to it. the processor isnt that bad, i've seen some older xp's with the same one, apparently this computer was top of the line when it came out hahahaha. maybe for now i should load an older version and see what happens. and maybe more ram in the future lol.

sure, if you happen to have an old PCI video card lying around. don't count on anything newer than a geforce2mx/radeon 7000 to work - and even those would be absurd overkill. a tnt or ati rage would be sufficient.
aprince009 wrote:the processor isnt that bad, i've seen some older xp's with the same one
the slowest processors on the market when XP was released would be spitfire durons and coppermine/128 celerons in the 750MHz and up range.
aprince009 wrote:apparently this computer was top of the line when it came out hahahaha.
it's got a celeron in it, and it has integrated graphics. a top of the line machine at that time would have had a p3 (probably 550~700MHZ) and discrete graphics (likely a Riva TNT 16MB AGP).
