When I try to "Save state" in Vista I get the message "Unable to save". Apart from the ZSNES program itsekf the only other related programs are the games plus "zsnesw.cfg", "zmovie.cfg", "zinput.cfg", "zfont" and "rominfo". If I need any files, please tell me where to get them. Thanks.
I have played through 80 % of Donkey Kong Country, so it's very important that I can save... I've even used the ingame saving spots (people familiar with the game will understand), but when I tried rebooting the game in anoher window no save file appeared...

Very true. However, Vista doesn't run apps with admin privileges unless you specifically tell it to. Any programs that abide by read-only settings on directories WILL fail appropriately.
Hope that helps if you (or other Vista users) have similar issues with any other program.

I have the same problem, how exactly do I do this?
Create a folder that has full permissions first (meaning full read/write). Then, make sure you know the path to that folder and enter it in ZSNES or the zsnesw.cfg file.
I created a folder, titled it Saves and placed it into the ZSNES program files.
I am the admin of the computer and after right clicking on the folder > Properties > Security it gives me a list of group/usernames and another list of permissions for the group/usernames.
After going to Advanced Permissions and the tab Effective Permissions it doesn't let me change anything.
Problem solved! Thanks a ton. I didn't know what you meant by paths, nor did I when I read for it, but browsing the Zsnes menus I found it =P /facepalm.
I think it also might help if you avoid sticking ZSNES in "Program Files" on Vista. "Program Files" is one of the protected directories, and normally on Vista, people run as limited users, so there is no write access there.
