Having problems with sound in Linux?

Post by Aerdan »

If you are having problems with sound in Linux and are using KDE, it is because arts and zsnes don't play along nor should they.

Please either: a. consider using a different window manager or desktop environment [I hear XFCE 4 is an excellent desktop environment, and it lets you use KDE apps, too!], b. install gentoo and follow these steps:

After having X working, but before emerging KDE, run:
USE="-arts -artsd" emerge kde

This will emerge KDE without arts, which will force KDE to use ALSA or OSS directly, rather than via artsd.

Or c. Compile SDL from sources unless you're using gentoo, which should use the proper plugin anyhow.

So I'm using KDE, and I don't have a problem, and I use Debian. Any ideas why I'm fine?

You probably installed the SDL package with all the audio drivers.
