ZSNES Linux Based Settop Box

Post by jlacroix »

Hello all, I am planning on (eventually) designing a Zsnes/Debian based settop box. (A small computer that will hook up to a television).

Basically I want to have an extremely tiny Linux installation, just enough to run ZSNES, sound, and joysticks, nothing more, nothing less. My wife asked me why don't I just dust off our snes? Well, this is more fun. :)

I need a Linux frontend to make this happen. Something that will allow me to select a game to play with the joystick. This "box" will not have a keyboard or a joystick. I'm also considering wireless controllers. I also need to be able to shut down this Zsnes box with the controller too. I already have the Linux part of it covered. I can do all that, I just need the front end. Any suggestions?

I don't have a lot of experience in other people's frontend's, but I'd look into this: http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/menu-readme.html
I heard some nice stuff about it.

BTW, you can run ZSNES without X if you compile SDL to use SVGAlib.

Thanks for the reply, but sorry, that menu doesn't have any Zsnes stuff. :(

You can't add it? They mention it works for any emulator.

"One size fits all" usually means "One size fits all Mame revisions" I'm finding out. :(

I don't know much about Linux ZSNES frontends, but I know Mr Slashdot wrote a generic one:

Okay the guy here said he managed to use MythTV:

Ignore his reports of loading from command line not working, we've since fixed it. BTW, if you use CVS, our new loader doesn't even use getopt() any more.

This guy has a frontend too, not sure if it works on Linux though:
