Controller directions with mind of it's own

Gamepad acting up? Keyboard not responding properly? Can't get that other user to work? Read and post about it here.

Controller directions with mind of it's own

Post by RPGer »

Hi, i'm new to this forum and i'm not sure if this has been addressed but i'm having some problems with the emulator. I'm using a Super Smart Joy snes convertor, i've tried multiple versions of zsnes and game pads and their all doing the same thing.

Sometimes the direction will just pull one way all on it's own, i won't even be touching the pad and it just pulls for about a second. It does this with Up, Down, Left or Right. It usually does this right after i make a movement with the control pad and just sticks to that direction for about a second. For awhile i thought i was just sucking at the games, but i found out it wasn't my fault! This is annoying, as i'm trying to have fun and it's not working out. Is there any fix for this? What can i do to correct this problem? Thank you for reading.

YES! I have the same problem with my Saitek P880. I can play fine but after a minute or two, it starts randomly pulling to the left or right really hard! It always seems to happen at the same time; when I play F-Zero, I always manage to get through about 3 1/2 laps before I SMACK into a wall on the left, and Super Mario Kart works fine for the first course and most of the second before it just goes loopy. I've had this problem with multiple Windows installations and ZSnes versions, but only in ZSnes. I can play games in FCEU, PJ64 etc perfectly with it, joystick or D-pad. Sometimes it eventually fixes itself but this doesn't seem to be happening this time.

Oh and it's not just those games... Even Super Mario World does it. Those are just the 2 I play most. :P It also works fine with the keyboard.

BTW, semi-related bug: if you unplug the joystick, then plug it back in, ZSnes won't recognize it until you close it and re-open it. Guess you could just use a save state, but eh.

[edit] Well I tried plugging it into the other USB port at the back, and now I pretty much have the opposite problem. It's a little better but every now and then it locks in whatever direction is being pressed for a second. I managed to get through the first level of F-Zero alright but there were a few points where it wouldn't respond to me pressing a direction or would stick in the direction I pressed after I'd released it. By the second level it was just doing all the same stuff again, veering off course and whatnot.

I actually had a similar problem (really laggy input) when I used the Saitek software, but I'm not using it now. I suspect the problem may be joystick-related... Is there a way to disable the joystick altogether or increase its deadzone in ZSnes? I've noticed in the control panel that the joystick sometimes moves slightly (a few pixels at most), and I wonder if ZSnes could be interpreting that as actual movement. I never use the stick for SNES anyway...

[edit 2] Well it doesn't seem to happen in windowed mode. Thing is, it lags like hell in windowed mode. (Go Celeron!)
It's-a me, Mario! Wait, no it's not.

Well, i've still yet to figure out this problem as well. I was recently playing some zsnes on zbattle on version 1.36 and forgot about the problem until it started it again while i was playing somebody in dbzhd, i know it's not any specific games that do this, or controllers because i've tried a multitude of them. I've learned that any versions of zsnes 1.42 and up run fine for me, i don't have the controller bug in those versions so i'll have to use them. But one annoying thing with the newer releases is i get a slowdown issue every once in a while but you can press f2 (which is the save state button) to correct it, but does anyone else have the slowdown problems? Is there anything i can do to prevent it, thanks.
