Sound recorded directly to mp3/4 or wave?

Post by Cyrus »

Well SPCs can be captured in Zsnes and made into waves or whatever other format using various programs. But I was wondering if something like this could impimented to Zsnes to directly record to a format such wav. Would this ever be considered?

If you look at video dumping, the answer should be obvious.

Raw PCM, maybe, but probably not MP3.

Just as teachers say when you are writing an essay or an explanation. Assume the person knows NOTHING and explain it so that person who knows nothing will understand. I don't even remember how to dump videos on Zsnes... ok so I do but still you get my point.

Anf if you've got MP3 or WAV output, then what? Are you going to go through the trouble to find where every song is in the game and rip it? If I wanted a bunch of MP3's from any game I'd go to zophar, download an entire soundtrack, and have some program like Winamp batch convert them all, even if Zsnes had MP3 encoding capabilities.

Some things can't be ripped to SPC and that's why you can't find a proper version of it. Mainly ones with vocals in them have that problem. Such as that opening song from ToP for example.

Problem with SPC's like the one in ToP you mentioned, I believe have a good reason for not ripping correctly, and I can understand wanting to bypass that problem by just recording sound output to MP3 or WAV or something.. But it seems pretty few and far inbetween of a thing (as a whole) for such a feature to have any great merit.

As Nach mentioned about recording movies, you might be able to use that to your advantage, and rip the sound from the movie file. That seems like a fair option. (I know nothing about the new movie dumping feature, I really should look into it though..) In general however, I prefer SPC's whenever possible. They're smaller, just as nice quality to me, and loop perfectly for as long as I want them to. In cases such as these, that's not an option of course.

One thing i'd want to know is the number of streamed SPCs in ALL the commercial snes games.

Afaik there are at least 2. One in ToP, one in Down the World.

Do you mean "streamed music", like in some Blizzard games?

I mean STREAM.
Like, even if you make a perfect dump of a tune, you'll miss samples. But do not misunderstand: despite the difficulty of properly dumping Star Ocean SPCs, it is doable (and has been done).
I don't want to know the list of 'hard to dump' games, but the list of games streaming the samples in the spc700.

All games stream in samples.
You mean games where samples are streamed in as BGM or alongside and synced to a BGM.

Bah, details. You get what I meant. games that keep pumping the spc with samples even during the tune.

Nach is currently working on the 64-bit proccessing thing for Zsnes. However would you be interested on working on this grin? Since the video recording is already done, would it be difficult to make it record only sound?

Amongst other things, yeah.

Not the least.

Since Nach did the current raw dumping code and I didn't take any real look at it, only he can say if it would be difficult to add.

I played ToP in a window, and recorded the opening song into a wav file, looping the lineout into the linein. That was on a ESS1969 though.
I tried doing the same thing on my Audigy 2, but it seemed to have missed some samples. Song skips regularly. Dunno why.
