I'm having problems getting older versions of ZSNES to run

Post by Karonath »

Specifically I'm trying to get version 0.989c to run. However, I've been unable to run anything older than 1.10. I'm getting the following message.
C:\Program Files\Snes\0A02E~1.989\ZSNES.EXE
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.net. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

This sounds like it is not compatable with Windows. The site which I downloaded it from, http://www.zophar.net/zsnes/archives.html did not label whether it was a Windows port, only versions after 1.10 were labeled as either DOS, Windows, or Linux.

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Are you running it on win xp? Win Xp has issues with the Dos port.

Yes, I'm running it on Windows XP. I forgot to mention that.
Is there anything I can do?

You need to use command prompt to run the program....I think.
Try out CCleaner and other free software at Piriform

I downloaded the file, just for the heck of it, and it is the Dos version.

You could try using Dos Box to run zsnes on Xp.

I've tried using the command prompt. It still results in the same error.

What about DOS Box like what Joe Camacho suggested?

Well, the good news is that DOS Box runs ZSNES 0.989c. Unfortuantely it runs it very slowly.
Unless there's a way to speed it up or another way to run ZSNES on Win XP, it looks like I'm out of luck with this.

Yeah, I'm trying to run a movie. I tried the newest version of ZSNES and it resulted in a desync, as I expected.

Windows XP and DOS are not a good mix. You're stuck if you ask me.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?

You say that you've tried the latest release, but have you tried the latest WIP from ipher's WIP site? It has fixes for 0.989c desyncs, though all aren't guaranteed to work.

You can't expect every movie to work under different timing.

Although all my Killer Instinct movies from way back work perfectly :)

See the documentation:
CTRL-F7 = Decreases frameskip
CTRL-F8 = Increases Frameskip
CTRL-F11 = Slows down the game
CTRL-F12 = Speeds up the game

Karonath:
Try ZSNES v1.000 (the first Windows version and very rare) to run some (not all) of this movies. The newest movies together with this Emulator are on my Site:

Nach:
Sadly none of my movies stays in sync even on the latest WIP. As you mentioned the timing is different. Terranigma is longest, playbacks till about 55000 frames and gets out of sync then.

A question: is it possibe to copy the movie-timing from ZSNES v.989c to the latest WIP? Maybe this problem would be solved then.

Yes it would be possible, but why? If we did that, we should have to do it for every version. It would also be a lot of pointless work to do it.

While we wish we had perfect timing and thus would never have to change it for future releases, sadly that is an extremely hard to obtain goal.

I just thought of one special version (so called special build of ZSNES). Again I thought copying something to another version is a matter of 5 min since you don't have to change or connect anything to another port.

I just got a person who wants make AVIs of this movies and I'm not sure if DOS would work for screen capture.

Well, if you posess the abilities for such a task, you are invited to do so, after all, zsnes is open source.

You are sorely mistaken. But we can't really blame you.

Nope, if I had this abilities I would do so (or at least try) 3 years ago already.

There is no need to blame me, I really have absolutely no clue how this all works and just asked 'cause I was not sure.
