Well there are three seperate characters in the party and the SNES DID have a 4-way controller port released for it, so it may be due to that.
It is better to be silent and thought a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt

Because SD3 has three characters and partly because Secret of Mana was 3-player. (People automatically assume that SD3 is 3-player too)IceFox wrote:Why is this such a frequently asked question? Not that I've ever played the game, but perhaps something in it is misleading?
I should probably address this in the ZSNES FAQ.

Can I ask how it would be very possible?
I dont know anything about the SNES and any of its hardware, but it would be my thought that it would be suprisingly difficult to actually hack the game for such a thing. Being as you would have to rewrite a small portion of the game to accept input, and then to control the third character.
It would take an awesome asm hacker in my opinion.

Fusoya did a two player hack for secret of evermore which uses a similer engine to secret of mana. I guess he thinks it would be possible to do the same thing to SD3 if he actually cared enough about the game. It's all in his email section on his homepage if you look at it. I'm sure any other experenced rom hacker could do it too if they cared.

There was a hack for that? I must be imagining things, but I thought I was playing with 2 poeple on the actual cart? I can clearly remember causing the dog to run around and annoy my friend who was in control of the main character. Will have to test to see if that was really possible, as I have been known to hallucinate things.
EDIT: Thats strange, but I guess not. Had to have been a hallucination.
EDIT 2: Something wrong with my space bar.

Yeah.. that's along the lines of what you'd have to do, however it might not be all that difficult. You just locate the input loop and add some code to poll a 3rd controller. That's the easy part.SquareHead wrote:Can I ask how it would be very possible?

The harder part is hacking in control over the 3rd character. I can only speculate on this portion. The best approach would be to examine some code on player two and how the code differs when it's controlled by human or AI. You may be able to copy/use alot of that code to get player 3 going. Or.. it might take quite a bit more work than that.
It does sound like a feasible hack though depending on what must actually be done to control that 3rd character and shut off the AI.

Yeah yeah, I know. Thread resurrection, etc., but there are probably still people who don't know that I tackled this about a year ago.
