setting up controller problems

Hey guys,
I'm new to this 'Zsnes program' . While I have installed the games without a problem and can activate the controls with the keyboard.
I was told to purchase a second hand console controller today. The retail guy told me this particuallar control will plug right in without an issue. After attaching it to the drive I'm stumped that I have no movement at all with the controller. The mouse still works etc. But nothing from the controller!!
When I click on 'config' I choose 'input 1' then select 'keys/joystick' insted of 'none'. But when it says 'set keys' the controller continues to remain unactive and says 'enter the key or button to use, esc. to clear'???
So question is Have I bought a broken controller? Or have I missed a step in the installation process? Ideas anyone.................Would be extremely apprieached.

OK, first, does Windows actually find it ? Check under the Game Controllers option in Control Panel. If it doesn't find it, take it back, NOW. otherwise, move on.

Does the controller (and all its buttons) work in the test app ? If not, take it back, NOW. Otherwise, move on.

Does the controller work in other games and emulators ? If not... well, that would be more of the fault of the program
