Is it a RAM problem?

Post by ouija1979 »

Hello, i was looking and i'm not sure if i have poster this before, it might have been at 9x forumz, anyhoo.

I was having problems with zsnes, it keeps going jerky the min i try to use any filters like 2xsai etc. it becomes almost unusable. I doubled my ram from 64 to 128, and i am still having trouble, altho mario all stars runs ok now without a filter, when i play yoshis island i have to have the auto frame skip at 1 to make it almost playable, any higher and it starts skipping like mad. :?

I have a 500mhz proscessor and 128 ram, dunno what graphics card i'm using.

The strange thing is i cant remember it doing this a few months ago, yet i have downloaded zsnes again. I am also having the same prob with snes9x.

My bro got a new comp and it runs like a dream on it with no problems :(

Any ideas??

Get a faster computer. the min. reqs for both snes9x and zsnes have gone up the last couple of years. I'd say try a WIP, but you'll probably get little improvment.

Seriously, its like that old doctors joke. If gets all skippy when you turn on filters, don't turn on filters.

If you really must use a filter, use Interpolation. Don't use any of the more advanced filters.

...

I'm speaking from exprience.

That should have no impact on performance, unless you have other programs in the background that are causing swapfile activity.

With a little bit of tweaking, you can usually disable a dozen or so startup programs that load themselves automatically every time you turn on your computer. These background processes are consuming memory and processing. If you disable them, your computer *might* regain enough resources to handle ZSNES with some basic filters. The quick (temporary) way to disable startup entries is using MSCONFIG from the Start>Run menu.

Ok, i have dissabled some things and still no joy, i guess ill cope with no filters for the time being. it works fine for the likes of mario kart and street fighter 2, and they are mostly the ones i play. It just seems to be sideway platformers it has problems, with.

Besides what am i realy wanting? I get to play all my old faves and for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Can't complain realy.

Your system is just too slow.. the most likely filter that will have low impact on your system is interpolation... and that's it.

You may get better results with the DOS port of ZSNES in a pure DOS environment (F8 during bootup on win98), but you may have a hard time getting your soundcard, video card and game controllers to work properly. It does perform better on slower computers, since there is no windows overhead. Otherwise, the minimum requirement for most filters (excluding interpolation) on the windows port is somewhere around 1GHz, I believe.

I see, so i deffo isnt a RAM problem. I'll need a new proscessor, I was thinking about getting a new comp, probably a laptop, and keep my pc for internet, at least my laptop will be portable and i know what specs to look for now.

Imagine buying a laptop based on the specs needed to run zsnes.. how sad am i? lol

Compared to the current generation of laptops and desktops, ZSNESW requirements are nothing, and nearly anything new (stay away from VIA/Cyrix processors) should be able to run it just fine. The Athlon 3000+ laptop we bought my mom for Christmas ran about $600US (from Circuit City) and should run it just fine (I'm not even going to try it--the only game she plays is solitaire). Even the $349 Black Friday Sale laptop from Walmart would do it just fine.

I don't know something seems wierd.. I think it's just your video card my specs are about the same. I use scanlines though. Graphics filters aren't that serious anyway, just use scanlines if you can't take the sqared up not smooth sprites.

The HQ filters are the ones that really matter. It requires a bit of CPU power.

Wow, and I thought I had it bad because all I have is an Athlon 64 3500+ with 2GB of DDR 400MHz, and a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP (yeah, video card sucks).

I have the LOWEST system specs out of like all my 10+ LAN Party Crew.
They've all pretty much went GeForce 7800s and Athlon 64 X2s (2 of them even have Athlon FXs).
They always make fun of me... but maybe I'll just show them this post, to shut them up

2GB of RAM is gunna be like required when Windows Vista comes-out.

Nope, I doubt it.

Vista will have OK minimum requirements, but like every MS OS, it will run like crap with the minimum.

I have to disagree. It's still a good mid-range card.

Yes, I'm using it right now. Never had a problem with it (temperature, compatibility, crashing, decent framerate). It's slow but it doesn't suck.

The 9800 Pro isn't too sucky. Beats my 9100...
