Volume Level Confusion...

Post by jdratlif »

When volume level is 0, should I be hearing any sound?

I thought when I went to 0, the sound shuts off, but this isn't the case. I tried the old 0508 version I was using before I updated to 0907, but it does the same thing. It was before stereo was enabled by default in the 0531 version. This is the only thing related to sound I saw changed recently.

The game is Lufia & The Fortress of Doom. Here is the output from NSRT.

NSRT v3.2 - Nach's SNES ROM Tools

---------------------Internal ROM Info----------------------
File: Lufia & The Fortress of Doom (U).smc
Name: Lufia I (ESTPOLIS I) Company: Taito
Header: SWC Bank: LoROM
Interleaved: No SRAM: 64 Kb
Type: Normal + Batt ROM: 8 Mb
Country: USA Video: NTSC
ROM Speed: 200ns (SlowROM) Version: 1.0
Checksum: Good 0xF3EB CRC32: 5E1AA1A6
--------------------------Database--------------------------
Name: Lufia & The Fortress of Doom
Country: USA Version: 1.0
Port 1: Gamepad Port 2: Gamepad

Am I wrong in what I think the volume level should do?

I tryed it on 0803, and did hear sound when it was turned down to 0.

However, there is a box that you can select to enable sound, disable that box and try again. Or turn off your speakers.

This worked for me.

This always happened to me when I used the DOS port... If I turned the sound to 0%, the sound wasn't really muted.

I haven't tried this with the Win version.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Oh, I don't want sound off. I just wanted to know if 0 on the volume level should actually be mute. Other games than Lufia are muted. Zelda 3, Final Fantasy 2, F-Zero. All these are muted, but not Lufia. No matter how much I crank the speaker volume on these games, 0 = 0. But Lufia is different. The volume control seems to have very little effect on the sound.

I'm just wondering if this is a bug, or the expected behavior. It seems as though it is a bug. I believe this because certain parts of the music do disappear when I set it to 0. These aren't sound effects, they're part of the background music. Maybe a different channel? I'm not sure. I can post a save state if someone wants to see what I mean. Put the volume at 0, and some of the music is muted, but not all. It's weird.

I played with the volume contols a bit and 0 seems to be about half as loud, maybe a third as loud as 100, it is irregular from the other games I have changed the volume control on.

Linux, too...

Post by jdratlif »

This problem happens in Linux too.

BTW: Has anyone had problems accessing CVS recently? I just tried to login to cvs @ sourceforge and it gave me this error message:

cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from cvs.sourceforge.net: M PserverBackend::PserverBackend() Connect (Connection refused)

Does that mean it's not accepting new connections right now? I grabbed the ChangeLog from the windows version, but it's odd that I couldn't use the cvs2cl.pl script.

Code: Select all

Logging in to :pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:2401/cvsroot/zsnes
CVS password:
cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from cvs.sourceforge.net: M PserverBackend::PserverBackend() Connect (Connection refused)
cvs [checkout aborted]: unrecognized auth response from cvs.sourceforge.net: M PserverBackend::PserverBackend() Connect (Connection refused)
Cvs has gone boink again. Nothing to worry about, I suppose.
