Do yourself a favour, and buy a mac instead.

Like the only positive thing that Vista sports is the fancy UI, and OSX does a better job at that.

In trying Beta 2 and RC1, there is nothing that is remotley useful about the addtions to it.

Hell, you can't run unsigned drivers in the 64-bit version, which is a hassle, as the last time I checked there wasn't a signed driver for my Augidy 2. I understand thats the point, but you need to turn it off every time I boot vista up, and that sent it to the trash pile.

Do yourself a favour, wait for Vista SP1 before ploping down money.

I'm not retarded enough to use Vista

Perhaps if I become infected by a brain parasite and have a sudden onset of down syndrome. But until then I will never use it nor buy it.

Now, I really don't know much, but as far as I understand the only things new in Vista are things that only provide inconvenience? That 3D shit is apparently completely useless, yet it is mandatory, taking up clock cycles when I don't want it to. No unsigned drivers? What else does it restrict?

I didn't want to corrupt my desktop with it, so I installed the M$ Virtual PC and tried to install RC1 on that. It kept failing after entering the key.

I ghosted my laptop and attempted to install it on that. Doing an upgrade install failed right after entering the key. I was able to do a fresh install, but I couldn't get my wifi or ethernet to work, and it didn't recognize my sound hardware, so it was absolutely useless. After 2 days of fighting with it, I ghosted my laptop back to XP.

RC2 kept failing after entering the key.

The only good thing I can say about Vista is they vastly improved Solitaire. That's it. It takes forever to install, forever to boot and you're damn lucky if you can find drivers for everything, including something as basic and as vital as an ethernet card.

Hahaha. Damn, sounds like I missed the bus then.

Although, from what I hear, sound card manufacturers will probably have stable drivers for vista by the time it's out. They say it's not as difficult of a transition between xp and vista as it was for 98 and xp.

I don't care much for the aero glass stuff. It really distracts me and the dark menu bar is kind of strange. I'm hoping they keep the good'ol gray windows scheme as an option (if not, someone will surely make a mod).

But yeah, this is odd because I've heard such positive things about it. They overhauled the way audio works, the security seems like a step up. Most of my programs and games sound like they'll work on it. Disappointed by reports of game performance drops, though...

Hmm.. now that you mention it, Aerdan kept having similar issues.

But yeah, right now I don't even have moneys for it. With this error in mind, they better fix that or I'll end up waiting till SP1 anyway (till I upgrade the RAM in my laptop)
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

There are far more negatives than positives, and the postives are coming from people that would be impressed you wore a different coloured shirt today.

You are pretty much stuck spending a premium if you like to upgrade more than once in a three year period.

Driver Certification is crap, and you are forced to use certified drivers for the 64-bit editions - if you want to test a beta video driver, then you need to disable driver certification at boot - the funny thing is you don't need to do this for the 32-bit versions. Awesome Security Improvment eh?

To re-itterate what Soul said... Yer a moron to pay for or use this.

You'd only use it if you're SOL if a game is Vista-only. That's about it. The certification is crap.. it's only a certain level of quality.. but it shouldn't be enforced like that (it's not even a security improvement really).

Well when I get my new comp put together, I'll likely just use xp with the latest RyanVM service pack add-on. That's really gay how they keep pushing back SP3 because of Vista.

Hopefully, MS changes the certification stuff before release.

I doubt they'll remove the 64-bit certification. AMD64 is a huge step forward toward trusted computing, and Microsoft would be stupid to not take advantage of it. They can't do that with 32-bit because they'd break older stuff in the process.

Myself? I'll be upgrading, don't have a choice. I work at a helpdesk and I support people who predominantly use Windows. If I don't know how to use anything after XP, that's a huge negative point on my resume. Also, the software I write needs to work on Vista. Period. That said, it'll be going on a secondary PC for as long as I can possibly stand to hold out.

I won't make the same mistake twice, as I remember vowing to never upgrade to XP, and I still say the Luna interface is a Crayola-inspired trainwreck, but I did anyway. It's more stable and the interface is so much smoother. You don't notice going from 98 to XP, but you definitely notice going back from XP to 98. Supposedly the D3D-enabled desktop finally prevents window tearing when dragging Windows. Something tells me I'm really going to like that. The rest of the Vista stuff I could really care less about.

I won't use it. I'm currently trying to learn Linux.. and there is wine.. so.. vista in = windows out of my system.

I guess I can take the same stance as snkcube. I don't think my laptop Core Duo 1.66Ghz W/ Radeon x1600) is fast enough to effectively run Vista and game. I could be wrong, though.
Macbooks are so expensive, its cheaper to buy two laptops, slap Windows Xp on one and Vista on the other. And MacOS sucks.

Its really gonna stinkhaving to upgrade to play games. Hopefully Linux will be able to pick up some slack and run them. But Microsoft is pushing and pushing to make sure you upgrade. They're still weeping, looking at all the people who didn't pay to upgrade to XP from 2k.

That, and they really want to own the contents of your hard drive. I'm looking for Microsoft to try and build a method that makes you pay by the file written in word, and can collect royalties on your work.

Oh, but they are soooo sexy. And I hope the OS barrier will keep me of from installing games and really using it as a work machine.

I have been using Linux for over a year, and I see no reason to switch to Windows now. Windows Vista doesn't bring anything to the table that interests me.

I don't envision us upgrading at work any time soon. There are a few DOS, 9x and NT4 machines running in the production facilities, and a few 2k desktops floating around. To make things worse, we have a bunch of programs that have issues running on certain model PC's. They're definitely not going to run on a new OS.
