there is nynorsk, bokmål, and riksmål, which maybe the same as bokmål.

you can't really call them "distinct" languages. norwegian itself is more like a dialect of danish. the other language variants came as a result of norwegians trying to distance themselves away from the danish. but it didn't work out very well.

So how much do they differ? In spelling and wording i mean, I think I know what most basic dialects sound like.
A bit like Am and GB English perhaps?

what's insane is that there are about 1110 languages on the island of Nugini (New Guinea in English) that is between the countries of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. There are over 3000 languages in the world, but that is still about a third of the worlds language groups on that one island, that my friends is where I grew up ;)
