Okami

Post by Unforgiven »

What's up with character's names being different in Okami's Japanese and English versions? For example Ushiwaka -> Waka, and Tsuzurao -> Rao.

Don't tell me they shortened the names because they're otherwise too complex for the average amerikkkan's comprehension or something.

Does [Kevin] Smith masturbate with steel wool too?

- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

I don't care either. It may just be easier to have "shorter" names to be easier to remember. Who said it had to literally be the same? Use your brain.

I've unlocked this for now, but if someone else locks it, then bleh.

I'll leave the op to rant on how retardedly paranoid his minor gripe is. Next minor gripe must probably should be on parody (or actually how the op doesn't get it).

Wtf is the difference and who was complaining about this? It can just be renamed to Kaeru. I always name him Glenn.

As for the other name shortening thing, no one gives a shit about jap names.

it's pretty clear to me, they do it to make all regions inconsistent so that fanboys a decade from now will come back and re translate it for emulators of the future, this keeps interest in the game alive for all the mysterious inconsistencies, it's all a scheme you see!

either that or the translators are A) stupid, B) lazy, or C) have some sort of secret brilliance in their name changes that enhances the game in an unfathomable way, clearly that is the answer.

Maybe they are easier for the average gamer to remember and identify.

But hey, if you feel you are screwed in the ass everytime you read "Rao", your choice.

Thanks for unlocking the thread. I myself thought locking it was a rather hasty decision.

Sometimes character limitations force them to use shorter names.

Just read the names differently if you care that much.

What do you hope to accomplish by babbling petty nonsense? You've already been given a thorough answer by Panzer, leave it at that.

"Thorough"? Hardly. But it did offer the suggestion that the translators were stupid and/or lazy, which is a possibility.

A helpful person did PM me suggesting that the "translation" was done because of technical space constraints (ie. names are too long and can't fit). However, I think it is unlikely, as space constraints is mostly a thing of the past.

At this stage however, I'm more inclined to think that the "translators" (I hesitate to call them translators), did it to dumb it down for the audiences. Nice for them to assume we have short memory spans, doesn't it?

Perhaps here in ammerikka, we use nicknames for everything, not because we cannot remember but because it is fucking easier. Why the fuck should fucking video game be formal?

That's like crying that I called a guy named Raymond, Ray. Your Paltry blather over nothing needs to go somewhere else. Ass riding commences hence.

That may be true, but developers don't think of making infinite # of spaces for just a name. Shortening it to fit it within reason is a sane idea.

No, you moron. They are "localizing" so when the average gamer speaks of the game in a forum, it makes total sense to everyone, regardless of region. Does a shorted name "change" the role of a character throughout a game? Does it change their speech or importance throughout a game? Does it completely kill a game?

If any of the answers are a "yes", then you are an idiot.
