Sorry about the lack of indenting in my code, I actually just pulled it from an example file and modified it to try to fit what I wanted to do. The file wasn't formatted so I had to enter line breaks and figure out where they began. So I wasn't totally sure on how the code was supposed to be structu...

Well we haven't been taught Perl yet, so I don't really know it. Plus this is a project based on UNIX shell scripting, so we have to do it that way. And trying without the square brackets didn't change the error. For example I used to have it as just "e"). It just doesn't like that ')' cha...

UNIX shell script problem

I'm writing a shell script (or a series of them) for a project, and I'm getting this error. ./proj1.sh: line 18: syntax error near unexpected token `)' ./proj1.sh: line 18: `[Ee])' This is what my file looks like. It's supposed to be some kind of a menu where you enter a character to open another fi...

ottitude, thank you, that was much simpler than what I had. But I don't understand the toUpperCase thing. I tried it in my code and got an error while compiling. I don't remember what the error was, but apparently the compiler didn't understand it.

I got it now. I remember doing it that way before and getting an error while compiling. Then I took the parentheses out and then it worked. But now it works with the parentheses. I dunno. :?

Yes, I've realized that now. grinvader. Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't actually try the minimum values in my program. But I don't get what you mean by my test being flawed. Right now the program does exactly what it's supposed to. Any values below those two ranges (there's another one for ma...

Alright, that did it. Thanks. :D

And while we're here, do you suppose you could tell me how to make it so that Y/y/N/n are the only acceptable values for marital status?

Help with some basic Java

So I'm taking an intro CS class and we're learning the basics of Java. Now we're writing a simple program to calculate tax. This is my first programming language, so I'm not very neat with it, but I was wondering if there was a way to take these many repeated lines out and instead put just one of th...

Well I resized the drive successfully now, thanks to this wonderful little program. I booted it from a floppy, and a couple of restarts later, I'm back up to 150 GB.

Anyway, I bought myself a new IDE hard drive so I could at least get Windows 2000 running on the new computer. The SATA is sitting in there as well, just not as a primary. It's working fine. Now, I used the slipstreamed Windows 2000 SP4 install, but still the IDE hard drive is recognized only as 12...

Well it's been a while, hasn't it? So what happened was my 30 GB hard drive that I've had for 5 or 6 years finally died. Or at least has damaged sectors. I was able to recover most of the data I wanted from it, except the data that was also on my flash drive... which also died shortly after. :? Anyw...

But it WAS broken. My BIOS would not recognize the hard drive no matter what I did. And it did not say anywhere that I should or could back up the old BIOS. Besides, I never had a problem with BIOS flashes before, why now? Why make one that's designed not to work?

Well the nLite made the CD bootable, but I'm still getting the error. I don't think it matters what I do now. I've tried different CD ROM drives, different boot settings, I think it's impossible to install Windows 2000 on this BIOS version. I need to revert back to the previous version but I can't f...

The CD-ROM drive? It's IDE. And no, nothing else is attached or plugged in besides the CD-ROM, the floppy, and the hard drive. I'm going to try finding an older version of my BIOS... that's the one thing I can think of that caused this all of a sudden.

Here's an odd thing. I get a stop error now even when there is no drive connected. It used to just tell me that there was no hard drive found. Maybe I did mess things up with that flash update... I have to find the original BIOS somehow.

Okay, I'm in the process of making a new Windows 2000 SP4 CD, if for no other reason than that installing the SP4 is always a tremendous hassle. But as I've said, I did try the VIA ATA/ATAPI Host Controller(Windows 2000) already, and I still got that stop error. I checked the BIOS and the SATA is no...

The drivers on the disk were both for RAID configurations and ATA/ATAPI Host Controllers for different operating systems, including Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and 98-ME. I tried most of them except 98-ME. I'm pretty sure that neither of these apply to me since the SATA is plugged onboard, not onto a ho...

Chances are, you may want to revert BIOSes and/or use older/newer drivers... Well the thing is I didn't get a chance to use the drivers again because I had to erase them to make room for the BIOS update. When I tried to copy the files again, the floppy drive stopped reading disks. It may work tryin...

No, I did press F6 at the right time. But the drivers that I selected did not work. However, that was before I flash updated the BIOS. Unfortunately, my new floppy drive fried this morning when I tried to format the disk. Now I only have one more drive and I'm afraid to try anything else with it. Th...
