Support ending for Windows XP SP1
Moderator: General Mods
Well that's good. They didn't end support for 98 and ME too soon.
Out of curiosity, what happens if someone installs a fresh copy of Windows 98 SE? Is there any official update service for them anymore, even if there aren't any new updates?

If you're not running the latest service pack for any MS OS, you might as well screw yourself.
Jipcy, I'm fairly sure they will still provide updates... just nothing new. On the other hand, if you're using Win98SE, you may want to get that unofficial 98SE service pack that includes a nice mod to bring the bland look of Win98SE to Win2k levels.

windows update is still there for old win98 users... (possibly even still have it for win95 if it ever existed for win95) but they state on the windows update main page that they are no longer releasing new updates and that they recommend you upgrade your o/s

windows xp limits the max half open tcp/ip ports to 10 and this can have a negative impact... there are fixes out there hat can a) return it to win 9x style or b) manually choose the max number of half opened tcp/ip ports

Windows Update does still exist and work for Win95; however, you have to install IE5 to be able to use it. The issue there is Microsoft no longer provides IE5 - you have to find it elsewhere (and THAT is a pain in the ass).franpa wrote:windows update is still there for old win98 users... Got any links? I also read something that certain fixes for this issue doesn't make it go away, because Microsoft hardcoded the connection limit into TCPIP.SYS.franpa wrote:windows xp limits the max half open tcp/ip ports to 10 and this can have a negative impact... there are fixes out there hat can a) return it to win 9x style or b) manually choose the max number of half opened tcp/ip ports
the latest bitcomet can do it for you... but uh im busy working on how to use linux
so i dont have the bookmark to what i use for it...
the thing is hard coded but the program i use disables wfp then backup then replace the tcpip.sys file.

Really? Wow. Why'd you wait so long?Agozer wrote:I just installed SP2 a few days ago.
I highly recommend slip-streaming service packs into your XP installation CD. Then do a format and re-install. Makes things much easier/cleaner. If/when SP3 comes out, I plan on doing the same thing. (And now that IE7 is nearly done, I think SP3 may be closer in the future).

I think I detect a hint of sarcasm in there. Just follow the article from TackTech. I don't know the details.Joe Camacho wrote:Dudes, do I need an original windows xp pro cd in order to slip-streaming a cd?

It says I need an original cd, then again, they might just say it because they don't want any troubles.Jipcy wrote:I think I detect a hint of sarcasm in there. Just follow the article from TackTech. I think it is a suggested requirement, but Service Packs update all system components (if you use the huge install package).. so I don't think it's an issue. I could be wrong.Joe Camacho wrote:It says I need an original cd, then again, they might just say it because they don't want any troubles.Jipcy wrote:I think I detect a hint of sarcasm in there. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsX ... ootcd.html - if you read a portion of it.. sometimes it may just be required (OEM cds after all have special alterations).
