WIP Netplay Lag ..

Post by tehnick »

I noticed when playing ZSNES netplay sometimes it lags so much that when 2 players are playing at the same time. When someone lags the slightest bit, it doesn't update on the other persons computer so then when it lags any buttons pressed don't go through so then were both seeing different things. Like on TMNT, I was playing with a friend and he was attacking the air though on his computer he was. On DKC team mode, I ended up being a few levels ahead of the person I was playing with. In MK, I can end up winning and yet on the other players screen it said he had won. etc.

This is not just with one person either, this has happened with many other people. This only happens when I'm using any of the WIPs, this has happened I know with 0920, 0907, and 0803 I haven't tried anything earlier to try besides the official 1.36 which works perfectly.

Oh, and I always play with UDP enabled, I and everyone I've played with have broadband.

UDP disabled is more accurate.
UDP enabled is probably best if you're on the same LAN.

Well it just happens that I was playing MK yesterday with a friend w/o using UDP, he couldn't forward his port for some reason. This problem occurred even worse then usual.. :?

Generally gameplay is a lot smoother using UDP, so are you sure about that?

I really prefer to use the newer zsnes WIPs because of the updates, but I can't because of the netplay problems..

UDP doesn't guarantee delivery of packets, which is why it's faster.

Ook I can understand that. :)

But how come this happens with UDP off then?

Some ISPs block UDP Ports, and there is NOTHING you can do about it.

The *other* protocol [TCP] *does* guarantee delivery, which is why it's slower.

And a hell of a lot more reliable. Only use UDP if you're playing on a LAN.

I don't think your getting what I'm saying..

TCP might be more reliable then UDP and this would occur less but it doesn't. It's about the same..

the point it is

this only happen when using the WIPs, NOT the official 1.36

so there must be some conclusion to this if it works fine in an earlier version

It really depends on how you are connected. I don't have troubles with the WIP. :? Your friend that makes your games lag, is he on a different ISP?

Using TCP may cause more of a lag, but it also has a less chance of desyncing.

that true or not, it still happens whether i'm using tcp or udp

the point is that it works fine in the old one, why is that? there has to be SOME reason.. and since there is, this can be fixed
