Star Ocean runs too fast

Post by Karonath »

I'm having trouble with Star Ocean's speed. During battles the game will start running at a speed which is unplayable. Even though the framerate is displayed at a steady 60 FPS. After the battle, the speed will return to normal.

I have tried using ZSNES 1.36. Not only do I get the same speed effect, but the graphics are entirely scrambled. I have also tried running it on the SNES9x emulator, on which it works fine. Although, I prefer using ZSNES, so getting it working on ZSNES would be great.

I'd be glad for any help on this subject.

I remember this was a known issue. It could of been fixed though. Try using 1.40.

I heard of this problem before, but when I tried it, it seems perfectly fine for me.

Sorry, I forgot to specify which version I'm using.
But I am already using version 1.40. And any older versions don't seem to run the game at all.

the older versions of Zsnes require the use of the graphics packs.

It's funny that you don't see it. I'm under the impression that Grin has told you about this "problem" before as well...
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

He told me about it. And he tried to help me recreate it to no avail.

Battle speed seems perfectly fine to me.

Bear in mind my SO isn't hacked though.

I played SO before we had graphic packs, Nach. I always got that behaviour in battles.

... if it's user-dependent, might it be another effect similar to the CT bug ? If so, something is really screwed up.

The CT bug is compile dependant. Pass me one of your buggy SO builds, and I'll have a look.

What the!? That happens to me, too! Is that how the game originally ran, you know, now that the S-DD1 chip is fully emulated?

I'm pretty sure a fully emulated S-DD1 chip won't matter.

It's supposed to be running at a constant speed..Try this, when you target an enemy during a battle, does it slow down all of a sudden? If so, then THAT's the speed it's supposed to be running at all time. (except for the slowdown that would naturally occur when there's too much stuff going on)

Snes9x does it right last time I check btw.

Edit: Just check with 1.40 Verified goodrom, unpatched StarOcean.
Runs too fast like before.

The speed is constant during the fight, and isn't that fast at all.

Can you give us the NSRT output of the rom you tested?
Either you're not testing on the official 1.40, either you haven't actually noticed the problem. Many people have reported the unusual battle speed.

Also, what port did you use for test? And what emulator settings?
Perhaps it's some settings that's causing this. Well I don't know.

So what would be the recommended solution? Just use Snes9x?
That's what it looks like I am going to have to do.

Yeah, that's what most of the people who can actually see the "bug" do.

The reason I said it was "fully emulated" was before Zsnes 1.40, S-DD1 game required using dexor to decompress graphics packs. Then again, Zsnes 1.40 could've made the game "broken".

Everyone who does or doesn't have the problem, can you specify if you have an AMD or Intel proccessor?

No, it didn't. The bug has been there as long as SO has been playable.

Sempron 2300+, v1.40 Win32, good (0x13B8) SO ROM.
Pretty much two times as fast as in SNES9x.

I do have the problem, and I'm running an Athlon XP.

I have a P3 box which I can test it on, but it needs some fixing up first, so it'll be a few days.
