I don't think addresses implies the same thing as answeres.
AspiringSquire wrote: The user also doesn't need to understand "FAQ" because the notice tells them that the "FAQ Section" covers common problems, thereby being more informative than grinvader's version.
The clearer the better. We also don't want to make them think just reading the FAQ section is good enough. Or even mention the FAQ section at all, as the Linux documentation doesn't have a FAQ section.

Much better. Will have to think if that's better than grinvader's though. They're close.

I'd have to say AspiringSquire's last one is my favorite.

Slightly moved text in the box. Now 26 chars per line possible.

But then there's all that QWERT vs. other keyboard key layouts thing...

But then again, when people come here claiming that 'Z' doesn't work, at least we know that they've read the reminder at least once.
Well, couldn't it be changed for a key that all keyboards share? but it's not as obvious as enter or space?
Apogee used the "C" key for their "Stargunner" demo. :?

All right! 8) It looks even better with that minor change. Thanks, grinvader! :) (This is going into the source code, right? ;))

I think it might look better with the text left-aligned, particularly because "problems and questions" is only one character longer than the two lines above that. The period at the end doesn't really balance it. Not such a big deal, though.

With the new 26-character limit per line, here's another way we could arrange the text, if you're set on centering everything.

Code: Select all

the documentation included
 with ZSNES for important
 information and answers
    to common problems
      and questions.

Press Spacebar to proceed.
Just suggesting some different ideas. Whatever you guys like is fine. :)

Almost, just when you thought that was all there was to it, we're adding a 2nd message ;)

RTFM, biznitch !

Seriously, it's related to config files, new versions, and less n00bs asking questions about nonexistant problems.

Okay, I could help with this also, if you can give me some basic parameters for the format of this second message (how much text, etc.). Will it use the same box that the first message had?

By the way, one of the "nonexistant problems" would be avoided if the default video mode were simply changed to something, anything else. I have had that double video screen with weird colors, too, but it only ever happened in 512x448 DR WIN. Wouldn't an easy solution be 512x448 R WIN as the default?

If you were completely serious about adding another message, I've made one that can be a starting point. Suggestions and modifications are expected, of course. ;)

Code: Select all

Before using a new version
of ZSNES, please remove
all old configuration
files to ensure full
compatability.
I think it might be best to have ZSNES detect whether any existing configuration files were made by the same version of ZSNES, so it would know if it is appropriate to show the message. This could be easily accomplished by outputting a version number (and compile date) in the config files when they are created initially (maybe every time, if you don't want the message appearing for each use of ZSNES until the user complies ;)).

Sorry that I couldn't think of anything extra to persuade new users to read the docs that would be in addition to the original message. :(

[By the way — awesome to be given credit in the update for contributing to the legendary ZSNES. 8) (Even for something so small. :P) Thanks. :D]
